About the Campaign
Listen Before You Dismiss began with one experience — but it is not about one person.
The campaign grew from concerns about what can happen when patients feel unheard, dismissed or reduced to a diagnosis instead of being treated as a whole person.
What began as an attempt to seek answers and accountability became something larger as other people began sharing their own experiences of rural healthcare.
Some spoke about poor communication, fragmented care, difficult discharge experiences and feeling that their concerns were not taken seriously.
Others spoke about the healthcare workers who made a profound difference simply by listening, explaining, looking again or speaking up.
Both stories matter.
Listen Before You Dismiss is not a campaign against doctors, nurses or hospitals.
It is a campaign for a healthcare system that listens, learns and improves.
We want rural patients, families, healthcare workers and communities to be part of that conversation.
The campaign advocates for better communication, whole-person assessment, continuity of care, safer discharge, meaningful complaint learning, appropriate clinical training and clear accountability when change is promised.
Because being heard should not depend on who is working that day, where you live, or whether your health needs are physical, mental — or both.
Listen before you dismiss.
Treat the whole person.
Every voice matters.
